Storms River – The body of a river guide has been recovered from the Storms River in the Tsitsikamma region on the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape after he apparently drowned in the river during a trip with another guide and several guests, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said Sunday.

From early light on Sunday morning, the NSRI Oyster Bay guard team assisted the South African Police Service (SAPS), a police diving unit, South African National Parks Rangers (SANParks) and the officials from the Eastern Cape government’s health forensic pathology services to recover the body of a 31-year-old man from the Storms River, NSRI Oyster Bay Station Commander Lodewyk van Rensburg said in a statement.

On Saturday afternoon, NSRI Plettenberg Bay guard crew and SAPS officers had responded to Storms River Mouth after nine people, two river guides and seven guests, were reported overdue from a raft paddle by the River Storms, he said.

Upon reaching the location, they found that eight of the nine people had arrived at the meeting place. However, they reported that one of the two river guides had fallen into the water upstream and was recovered by the group that performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts by a bystander in the man “for an extended period of time, but Unfortunately, the man was not revived. “

An operation was arranged to recover the body of the deceased and was carried out from first light on Sunday morning.

“The man’s body has been placed in the care of the EC government’s forensic health pathology services and the police have opened an investigation file. Condolences are conveyed to the relatives and friends of the deceased,” Van Rensburg said.
