On September 28, 2015, Trevor stepped in as the new host of the satirical news show, taking over from Jon Stewart.
Five years later, the SA comedian has become one of the most popular late-night hosts on American television.
“South Africa’s favorite comedian has transformed the content of the Daily Show to address issues affecting the everyday viewer. This can be largely attributed to the team that Trevor Noah surrounds himself with, which includes South African comedian and supervising producer David Kibuuka, the Ugandan writer Joseph Opio and more diverse Asian and African American contributors to the show, “Comedy Central shared in a press release celebrating Trevor’s accomplishments.
While he has interviewed Hollywood actors, television personalities and politicians, Trevor has also continued to celebrate African talent. Stars like Black coffee, Burna Boy, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Both Tunzi and Nelson Makamo have made guest appearances on the show.
“It is very fitting that at the close of Heritage Month we can celebrate a South African who has brought our stories and culture to the world. Trevor Noah had big shoes to fill when he took the reins on The Daily Show, and I’m not proud to celebrate this incredible milestone as it shows what is possible for Africans, “said Dillon Khan, Vice President of Comedy Central and Creative Services at ViacomCBS Networks Africa.
Trevor’s success in the US has seen him do Fortune’s prestigious 40 Under 40 alongside stars like Beyoncé and Zendaya.
The 36-year-old has also reaped the monetary rewards that come with work, splurge on fancy houses worth millions of dollars.
And while some may have taken a while to get used to Trevor heading the show, former host Jon Stewart believes the South African star has taken it to the next level. telling Howard Stern that “the show is better” since Trevor took over.
In 2017, just two years after Trevor joined the show, Comedy Central announced would extend the comedian’s contract until 2022.
“He’s a doorman. Trevor Noah will host The Daily Show until 2022, along with the end-of-the-year specials,” the channel tweeted at the time.
