Durban – One of former President Jacob Zuma’s sons, Edward Zuma, has become the latest high-profile figure to criticize Deputy Chief Judge Raymond Zondo, who chairs the ongoing state capture commission, for the way he is. treating the former leader of the country.
In an open letter written Sunday, Edward Zuma demanded that Zondo recuse himself when the former president appears before the commission in November.
The outbreak stems from Zondo’s Sept. 21 press conference, where he said he was unwilling to negotiate with Zuma and his legal team about when to appear before the commission. He then said that Zuma would be summoned to appear Nov. 16-20 this year to respond to allegations made by various witnesses that he aided in the state capture by bowing to the Guptas.
That decision outraged Gauteng’s Zuma supporters (Gauteng RET President Zuma’s support group), who said Zondo was targeting Zuma and was not forcing others like Public Business Minister Pravin Gordhan to appear before the commission to be questioned.
Later in the week, the Jacob Zuma Foundation added its voice to the chorus of criticism against Zondo and said it was using Zuma to secure the soon-to-be-vacant Chief Justice position by “targeting” it for public humiliation.
On Sunday, Edward said that Zondo even violated the country’s constitution while participating in “theater” against Zuma.
According to him, Zondo was targeting Zuma because he is on a path of self-preservation. Furthermore, like the foundation, Edwards alleged that Zondo was considering the office of Chief Justice and was proving himself to the appointing authority by being tough on Zuma.
“Zondo through Zuma, has raised his hand to be nominated to become the next Chief Justice,” Edward stated.
He then pleaded with Zondo not to let his personal problems cloud him and that “his anger” toward the former president should not stifle his court case.
“The best Zondo can do now is recuse himself, as he has clearly shown that there are politicians like Jamnandas (Gordhan’s other name) that he fears or protects. The integrity of the state capture commission is now greatly compromised. Zondo has played the game of politicians who hate former President Jacob Zuma. “
In response to all statements made against Zondo, the commission’s spokesman, the Rev. Mbuyiselo Stemela, said: “The DCJ (Vice President of the Supreme Court) does not intend to respond or comment on the statements.”
