‘I promise I will do my best to make sure Roger Federer remains number one,’ says the ATP star
Dominic Thiem says he will do “everything” to help protect Roger Federer’s Grand Slam legacy and records.
Federer has won 20 Grand Slam crowns in his career, more than any other man in history.
Yet the 39-year-old now seems unlikely to add to that total, particularly with Novak Djokovic in such brilliant form.
Thiem, however, is in a much better position to challenge Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for major titles in the coming years, particularly since winning his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows earlier this month.
And, after declaring Federer completely unique in tennis, he has vowed to do his bit to prevent his rivals from reviewing his records.
“Roger Federer congratulated me on my victory at the US Open,” Thiem told Blick.
“I promise, I will do my best to keep Roger number one (smiling).
“No other player can compare to Roger, he is one of a kind, a much more aesthetic and elegant player than me.”
