José Mourinho has responded to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Manchester United manager taunted his Tottenham counterpart.
Mourinho complained about the size of the goal posts following his team’s 3-1 win over Shkendija in the Europa League on Thursday night, noting that the crossbar was five centimeters lower than regulation.
And after watching Brighton hit the wood five times in a remarkable 3-2 loss to United on Saturday lunchtime, Solskjaer referenced Mourinho’s protests.
“You have to be happy that José is not here to measure the goalposts, it could have been a smaller goal,” joked the United manager.
Mourinho, however, did not welcome comments from his United successor, pointing to United’s reliance on penalties during Solskjaer’s tenure at Old Trafford in return.
United required a late penalty shot from Bruno Fernandes, awarded by VAR after the final whistle, to beat Brighton at the Amex.
“I think yesterday Ole was so happy and surprised with what happened to his team that he made a joke,” Mourinho told Sky Sports, before his team’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle.
“But I think that for him the dimension of the goalposts is not important. For him the important thing is the dimensions of the 18-yard area.”
“He would never accept to play with a 17-yard box, I think he would prefer a 22-yard box. For him it would be better.”
Mourinho and Solskjaer will meet on the Old Trafford touchline next week when United host Tottenham in the Premier League.
