  • On September 18, Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear was assassinated in front of his home in Bishop Lavis.
  • The Sunday Times reports that Kinnear was on the verge of solving a case involving the Police Central Firearms Registry and suspected gangsters.
  • The newspaper also reports that the man arrested for the murder is related to the alleged boss of the underworld, Nafiz Modack.

Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear, a detective who was killed in front of his Cape Town home on September 18, was reportedly on the verge of solving a large case, according to a media report.

The case concerned an “arms against gangs” union and involved the Central Firearms Registry (CFR) of the police.

According to the Sunday Times, the Kinnear investigation, which had defeated many other detectives, was a threat to the criminal underworld and a corrupt police network.

The newspaper cited two different experts who monitor the influx of firearms flooding the underworld.

According to the report, the possibility of a link between the Kinnear murder and the CFR investigation quickly became the detectives’ main line of investigation as they tried to solve the murder of their colleague.

Arrest

On Thursday, police arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with Kinnear’s murder.

The man, who appeared in Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court on Friday, is former professional rugby player Zane Kilian.

Kilian was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal wiretapping.

The latest charge is believed to be related to the tracking of Kinnear’s cell phone.

The Sunday Times further reported that Kilian, who lives in Gauteng, was a debt collector for alleged underworld boss Nafiz Modack.

The anti-gang unit, of which Kinnear was a part, was allegedly investigating Modack, and it resulted in his arrest on gun fraud charges earlier this year.

Modack was one of 16 people arrested, including police officers.

News24 reported that police were investigating fraud and corruption related to firearm license applications.

Modack, who responded to the Sunday Times, told News24 that although Kilian collected debts on his behalf, he had no relationship with the man.

Modack added that he had nothing to gain from Kinnear’s death.
