  • Police have already arrested more than 30 police officers, vendors and civilians in the case.
  • Two of the defendants face additional charges of perjury for failing to disclose their previous convictions.

Three more people have been arrested in connection with an alleged R56 million police vehicle brand scam.

On Friday, the National Anti-Corruption Task Force assigned to the Investigation Directorate of the National Prosecutor’s Office arrested a colonel, an administrative employee of the police supply chain management division and a civilian.

They face a number of charges including fraud, corruption and money laundering, said Hawks spokesman Col. Athlenda Mathe.

In August, 15 people were arrested in connection with the police vehicle brand scam. Nine of them are former police officers or on duty and the remaining six are vendors or associated vendors. In June, 15 other defendants were arrested, including a retired police general and senior and junior officers.

Another five people turned themselves in earlier this month, including four police captains and a civilian.

Two of the civilians, arrested in June and released on bail of 5,000 rand, have been re-arrested.

“The couple have been arrested again after due diligence was conducted by the Investigations Directorate work that found that the couple lied under oath about having no prior convictions. They were re-arrested and each faces an additional charge of perjury, fraud and failure to disclose prior convictions in violation of section 60 (11B) of the Criminal Procedure Act, “said Mathe.

The possibility of further arrests in this case cannot be ruled out, Mathe said.
