It has been another quiet transfer window for Los Blancos, although their head coach is not panicking despite their recent struggles in front of goal.
Zinedine Zidane insists that he will not pressure the Real Madrid board to bring in attack reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
Madrid have been quiet since the market was reopened and the 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad to kick off the La Liga title defense disappointingly suggested that Zidane might have to look for solutions beyond his team.
However, despite allowing creative talents like Gareth Bale, James Rodríguez and Brahim Díaz to leave, the head coach told reporters before Saturday’s game against Real Betis that he will not bother Florentino Pérez to get the checkbook.
“This is the template I have to work with, I’m not going to ask for anything more,” he said.
“But I know that anything can happen between now and October 5. I think the best thing for all the coaches is that the transfer deadline comes and goes. I think I have the best team and I am completely behind my players.”
Perhaps Madrid’s most recent attempts to spend heavily and beef up their attack are serving as caveats.
Eden Hazard is still improving his fitness for the match and is unavailable – the start and stop nature of his disappointing first season at the Santiago Bernabéu seemingly plays out on a circuit few enjoy seeing.
“Okay, that injury is no longer a bother,” Zidane said of the damaged foot that required surgery last period. “But he needs to have training sessions under his belt, he needs to work for the team and go slow.
“In a short time he will be with the squad. What we want and what the player wants is to be part of that first team squad and play.”
Luka Jovic was once again an unused substitute in San Sebastián, but Zidane argues that the former Eintracht Frankfurt favorite has a role to play, perhaps even in tandem with starting striker Karim Benzema.
“They can play together. But we have many games to come and there are many different styles and formations of play. Each game is different,” he said.
“We also have to take our opponents into account. Also, as I said, every game is different and players have to be chosen accordingly.
“I’ve never said that Karim and Jovic can’t play up front together. I can see it, definitely.”
Zidane added: “Last season we won two titles, so obviously we had no problems scoring and winning titles.
“You go through periods where sometimes you have a hard time scoring and missing those opportunities, but it’s something you work on to improve.”
