JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered that the salary of Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula be paid to the Solidarity Fund for the next three months, as detailed in a reprimand for the African National Congress (ANC) delegation’s trip to Zimbabwe

Ramaphosa issued the formal reprimand to the minister after it emerged that he allowed a high-ranking ANC delegation to take a South African National Defense force plane to the neighboring country earlier this month.

Facing backlash, Mapisa-Nqakula claimed that she was on a working visit in her capacity as minister, and simply gave ANC members “a shove.”

Pressure had increased on the president to act, and political parties and civil organizations were crying badly over an apparent abuse of state resources by the ruling party. But Ramaphosa says his help to the delegation was not “in the best interest of good governance” as required by the executive member code.

In a statement issued Saturday night, Ramaphosa said Mapisa-Nqakula demonstrated “an error of judgment” that does not agree with the responsibilities of a cabinet minister.

In addition to reducing his salary, Ramaphosa also instructed him to ensure that the ANC reimburses the state for the costs of the flight and to inform him once they have done so.
