Sixteen youths have been selected to join the Green and Gold training teams in preparation for the Springbok Showdown next Saturday.

The young players, largely selected from the ranks of the Junior Springboks, will spend the week in camp with the two respective squads before returning to their provinces to begin the U21 interprovincial championships.

“This is a great opportunity for these young people to get a taste of the Springbok environment and also an opportunity for national coaches to meet some of the best emerging talent in the country,” said SA Rugby director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus.

“There may even be an opportunity for one or two of them to get some action in the match if there is an injury or Covid-related issue during the week, but the main goal is to continue the national alignment process.”

Erasmus, in association with Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber and assistant coaches Mzwandile Stick and Deon Davids, chose two national teams, Green and Gold, for a unique ‘Test’ to resume the South African season in Newlands on Saturday 3rd October. .

The teams feature the top 50 players in the country, including 13 Rugby World Cup winning Springboks, who will prepare in separate bio-bubble environments in Cape Town with the support of the Young Guns.

‘These young people have had their year completely interrupted by the pandemic. But we have not stopped tracking them or planning their future and they will discover that we already have a roadmap prepared for their further development ”, Erasmus explained.
