Vodacom Bulls coach Jake White says veteran midfielder Morne Steyn still has a “huge role to play” for the team during the upcoming national season.

Steyn is one of two flyhalves on the Bulls’ 30-man squad for Saturday’s preseason clash with the Sharks, with Chris Smith, 26, also on the team.

The 36-year-old returned to Pretoria earlier this year after spending seven years in France with the Stade Francais, a move that coincided with the departure of the young Manie Libbok from the franchise.

It will be the first time that Steyn and former Springbok coach White have worked together, as during Steyn’s heyday, White was overseas with the Brumbies and Montpellier.

Speaking ahead of Super Fan Saturday games, with the Bulls back in action for the first time since mid-March, White praised Steyn’s skill.

“I had never worked with Morne Steyn before and when he was thriving in South Africa, I was abroad,” White said.

“ I saw their progression at Stade Francais, where they won championships with them, and they are an incredible kind of team, full of energy.

“He is much more athletic than people think and the older he is, the more he understands what he can and cannot do.

“He takes care of himself, he’s very fit and he’s a great role model. There’s no question that he still has an important role to play for the Bulls and he’s exactly the kind of general we need. ”
