JOHANNESBURG – Eskom has condemned what it called “persistent, baseless and defamatory accusations” leveled against COO Jan Oberholzer.
The company held an internal disciplinary hearing to investigate the executive’s conduct after he was accused of misusing his position to pay millions of rand to a particular contractor.
Eskom said a recent ruling by the Johannesburg High Court had acquitted Oberholzer of any wrongdoing.
The utility company said it wanted to set the record straight months after Oberholzer was essentially charged with abuse of power.
He approached lawyer Nazir Cassim for an investigation following allegations that Oberholzer was in the best interests of the Aveng contractor by pressuring an employee to pay a R40 million bill to that company.
Cassim advised that the matter should be resolved by the courts which subsequently ruled in Oberholzer’s favor.
In a statement, Eskom’s board now said it affirmed its full confidence in the executive’s integrity.
Eskom also said it would honor the court’s ruling that ordered Aveng to pay his 40 million rand along with accrued interest until the debt was paid.
