JOHANNESBURG – The family of ANC Bay Councilor Nelson Mandela Andile Lungisa said his decision to remain behind bars was not an admission of guilt.
Lungisa rejected a bail offer from the Makanda High Court on Friday.
He was granted R10,000 bail in his assault case after he struck a councilor for the district attorney with a jug of water on the head in 2016.
His family said he chose to remain behind bars not because he was guilty of something, but because he wanted to finish the programs he had already started.
“But he also has elements to try to prove that he is one of the people like most South Africans who are law-abiding citizens,” said his brother Ayongezwa.
The #FreeAndileLungisa campaign said it was still seeking absolute justice.
“He is persecuting him because he feels that he will find maximum justice in the supreme court of the country.”
The legal documents of the counselor are before the Constitutional Court.
It is unclear how long Lungisa will remain behind bars.
