JOHANNESBURG – African National Congress (ANC) Nelson Mandela Bay Councilor Andile Lungisa will remain behind bars, despite being released on bail in Makhanda High Court.

Lungisa was granted bail of 10,000 rand, after his long attempt to appeal his two-year jail sentence for assault.

The councilor was convicted after smashing a glass water jug on the head of a councilor during a fight in 2016.

Lungisa has been fighting to avoid prison, having presented multiple appeals for his conviction, even approaching the Constitutional Court.

Her heart’s wish was granted on Friday, but she has now chosen to decline the bail offer.

Speaking to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), his brother Ayongezwa said that Lungisa has some unfinished business behind bars.

“Andile has an interest in finishing the programs that he would have started inside the prison.”

He said the family could afford to rescue him.

“We are not a family in which we could literally show bank accounts, but we had money, and to the point of having withdrawn money to rescue it.”

It is not clear how long Lungisa will remain in prison while the Constitutional Court has yet to pronounce his appeal.
