The Barcelona superstar had submitted a transfer request early in the off-season period, but his dispute with the club over some critical terms and conditions discouraged any possible exit.
In an emotional interview, the 33-year-old revealed that he indeed wanted to leave the club and criticized the way the current authority directs the proceedings. Messi said he did not want to take Barça to court for what they had done for him and that was practically the only reason why he chose to fulfill his contract until 2021.
The player is on his way to 21 years as a culés player and joins players like Steven Gerrard and Francesco Totti in an illustrious list of men from a single club. That said, this season will also be historic for the captain, as he will now be the only player left from the iconic MSN trio of yesteryear, following Luis Suárez’s departure for Atlético Madrid.
