The boss of the assassinated lead detective Charl Kinnear, Major General Andre Lincoln, has vowed to leave no stone unturned to lead his killers to the book.
Lincoln spoke during Kinnear’s memorial service outside his home in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, on Thursday.
A canopy was installed a few feet from where Kinnear was killed in a hail of bullets Friday afternoon.
“Friday’s event will be remembered as the worst day for the AGU (anti-gang unit),” Lincoln said. “This is not going to be a lightning bolt. I spoke with the minister [of police, Bheki Cele] on Friday and said war has been declared. “
Addressing Kinnear’s wife Nicolette, Lincoln said, “I want to assure you Nikki that we will fight to the end.”
Crowds of people flocked to pay tribute to Kinnear, who was shot point-blank while sitting in his car.
The emotional service was attended by his colleagues from the anti-gang unit, the province’s senior police officers, the Mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, and the Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission, Chris Nissen.
The memorial took place on the same day that the police announced that a man had been arrested in connection with the murder. The man, who was arrested in Springs on Gauteng’s East Rand, is expected to appear in court on Friday.
