JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the economic sanctions on Zimbabwe and South Sudan to be lifted to allow the two nations to effectively tackle the coronavirus.

Ramaphosa spoke during a speech to the 2020 United Nations general assembly.

He also called for the suspension of interest payments on the debt in the continent.

Ramaphosa said developed countries need to help underdeveloped nations fight the coronavirus.

“When the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, delivered Nelson Mandela’s 18th Annual Conference in July 2020, he called on the nations of the world to forge a new social contract and a new global agreement. He said that we must create equal opportunities for all and that we must promote a more inclusive and balanced multilateral trading system. “
