Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is indebted to Fabinho for saving him the trouble of spending more than £ 30 million on a new defender, according to an Anfield legend.

Fabinho was possibly the man of the match in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Moving to the defense of injured Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, he held off speedy forward Timo Werner on several occasions.

The performance comes amid conversations that Liverpool could look to fill a void in their defensive ranks. Dejan Lovren has left for Zenit St Petersburg, leaving Klopp as a renowned central defense light.

However, John Aldridge feels that Klopp now has no reason to spend on a new addition after the Fabinho show.

“Fabinho was outstanding at the heart of the defense and as long as he is happy to play in a central defender position, he seems to have the potential to become Virgil van Dijk’s first partner,” he wrote in a Herald newspaper column.

“Chelsea tried to target Fabinho as he would have been perceived as a weak link in the Liverpool defense, but Timo Werner knocked on his door over and over and there was just no way out.

“It looks like Fabinho will save the club £ 30 million this summer as that and more would have been spent trying to find a central defender to pull off such a performance against a high quality opponent and eliminates a big problem for Klopp and the club.”

‘Thiago’s display will scare Pep Guardiola’

Aldridge also feels that Thiago Alcantara will take Liverpool to a new level this season, after the Spaniard’s debut.

Thiago entered the break at Stamford Bridge and ended up completing the most passes of any player on the field.

“Thiago lived up to his expectations with his magnificent debut for Liverpool at Chelsea last Sunday and has already taken Jurgen Klopp’s team to the next level,” added Aldridge.

“It was always difficult to build near perfection as that is what Liverpool produced for most of last season when they ran away with the Premier League.

“However, I look at the calm, composure and sheer class that Thiago showed after he entered halftime in the game at Stamford Bridge and that fueled my belief that Liverpool can start and find another gear in the coming months. .

“It is a reality that has to send a shiver of fear to their rivals, as while Manchester City looked good in their victory against Wolves on Monday night, Pep Guardiola and his players will not have liked what they saw of the Liverpool as they did beat Chelsea.

“I know they were down to ten men in the second half after the red card that was rightly given to Andreas Christensen for his rugby entry to Sadio Mane, but the work still had to be done and the champions completed it with ruthless efficiency in The second half.”
