JOHANNESBURG – City Power said that contrary to popular belief, residents of affluent suburbs were the ones who defaulted on their electricity bills or had illegal connections.
Authorities were carrying out what they called “surprise cuts” on houses in Dainfern, near Fourways, on Wednesday afternoon.
Isaac Mangena from the utility company said this intervention shows that they are not only targeting poor areas.
“Most people when they think ‘illegal’, immediately the areas they go through are municipalities like Alexandra and others. But if you look at the collective amount these types of areas owe, it’s not even half of what these posh suburbs owe. “
He said they were all equal before the law.
“One of the values was to say that most of the prime ministers, MMC and ministers stay in this area, so what do you come to cut them off? ‘, The answer was simple; Those are the people who are supposed to be leading by example. “
The operation targeted Dainfern Extensions, Dainfern Proper and Dainfern Ridge, where City Power is owed and loses millions in revenue.
