Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes.
OUR RATING
5/5 stars
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
While searching for her missing mother, intrepid teenager Enola Holmes uses her detective skills to outwit her older brother Sherlock and help a runaway lord.
WHAT WE THINK:
I knew I would love Enola Holmes. A refreshing new Holmes, determined to find his mother, embarks on an adventure and solves a mystery along the way that changes the course of history, while revealing that the only person who can outsmart the great Sherlock. it is none other than your baby. sister. As the youngest of three siblings, this story makes perfect sense to me and as a young girl who dreamed of investigating, solving mysteries, you can tell, and sharing stories with the world, it was about time we finally heard from Enola Holmes.
Enola is a brave and sharp character. Knowing nothing about the outside world, he embarks on an adventure on his own, using the skills his mother taught him to outwit even a murderer. Millie Bobby Brown plays the character, and not only does she make her likeable, but she gets the audience to join her on her journey.
Although Enola is alone – “My mother called me Enola, which backwards means alone,” she says – her character breaks the fourth wall and lets us into what is going through that head of hers. Millie has the fierce and badass, having played Eleven, battling monsters from the Upside Down, for three seasons Strange things now. I enjoyed the fun and humorous side of Enola that brought it to life, which made it a really enjoyable adventure film to watch, one that has a lot of meaning for children and adults.
On his journey, he meets Viscount Tewksbury, played by Louis Partridge, who also gave an outstanding performance as a runaway young lord who preferred to pick flowers and go mushroom hunting, a novel idea for a boy at the time.
Although it is an adventure film for girls and boys, Enola Holmes offers many comments in the context of the early days of women’s suffrage. Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Claflin and Henry Cavill also star in the film, but in reality it is Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge who take center stage showing the growth of their characters. They both manage to highlight their characters’ vulnerabilities so well in an ever-changing world.
In an interview with Channel24Louis says you see Enola in boy’s clothes while Tewksbury has long hair; Enola is not a damsel in distress, she is the one who saves Tewksbury, while he would rather read about flowers than live the life expected of him. The corsets, the hair, everything is a symbol of oppression, but it is a world in need of a change, which is a powerful message that girls and boys should take from the film. I quite liked that there was more than the literal mystery that needed to be solved.
By societal gender norms, Louis says, “Enola looks more like a boy than Tewksbury, and that’s okay. [I hope] young people realize it’s okay You should do it, be yourself. “
When I think of everything it took to make this fun, witty, captivating, sometimes emotional film, from the thoughtful evolution of Enola’s wardrobe to Tewksbury’s haircut, I can’t complain. Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge brought these characters so much life that we have yet to see them in film and television. It’s comforting to know that girls and boys around the world will identify with, admire, and aspire to be them.
Channel24’s interview with Millie Bobby Brown also highlighted something thoroughly inspiring about the movie’s message: that life isn’t necessarily about being alone, but about going your own way.
“Personally, I think this movie is a great message for teens struggling with loneliness,” says Millie, adding that she hopes the movie communicates that we all have to take time for ourselves, to find ourselves.
The game is on! Now that is an adventure, if there ever was one!
