Nehawu members, who are protesting the possibility that public servants’ salaries will not be increased this year, as well as alleged failures in the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers during the pandemic of Covid-19, held a demonstration at Union Buildings on Monday.
The union delivered its memorandum to the government on September 3 and gave Ramaphosa a week to respond to their demands.
Part of Nehawu’s demands to improve workplace safety is the acquisition and provision of adequate PPE for frontline workers, based on “credible total workforce figures” and the type of work performed by category occupational of employees.

On Monday morning, Nehawu spokesman Khaya Xaba said they would protest at Union Buildings until Ramaphosa responds appropriately and positively to the memorandum of demands that was presented to him earlier this month.
“Unfortunately, since we presented the memorandum of demands to the President of the Republic, he has not responded to our demands since he was given seven days to reply that they expired September 10, ”Xaba said.
