MUNICH – BMW has unveiled its new M3 and M4 performance models ahead of their world debut on Wednesday, September 23, after which the cars will undoubtedly be teased differently due to their huge kidney grilles.
The smoked images don’t show much, but we get a glimpse of the bolder bumper designs, as well as the treatment of the headlights and taillights. BMW also wishes to emphasize the fact that the new models will again be available with a manual gearbox, although this will only apply to the base models.
As previously reported, the new M3 and M4 will be powered by an improved three-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which will be offered in two output versions. The base model, paired exclusively with a manual transmission, will produce 353 kW, while the Competition model, paired as standard with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, will run on 375 kW.
For the record, the two respective models produce 44kW and 36kW more than their predecessors, while the maximum torque increases by 100 Nm in both cases, to 650 Nm.
Both variants will be rear-wheel drive, but BMW has confirmed that the Competition, at a later stage, will be offered with the long-rumored M xDrive all-wheel-drive option, likely with a RWD drift mode as well.
As before, the M3 and M4 will have an M-specific chassis configuration, and BMW promises “comprehensive innovations” in the areas of traction, wheel suspension, springs, shock absorbers and braking technology.
Watch this space for all the details on Wednesday, September 23.
