Durban – Newcastle Township is asking for the public’s help in locating a man who allegedly stole a council vacancy mailbox this morning.

The man is believed to have stolen the box around 10:30 a.m.

According to the municipality, it is not clear whether the man worked alone or had internal help.

“The municipality believes that the suspect will target unsuspecting job applicants and try to request money from them, in exchange for jobs. An investigation is currently underway,” said municipality communication chief Mlungisi Khumalo.

He said the man was caught on closed-circuit television cameras and was wearing a white hat, blue jeans, black takkies and a gray sweater and a yellow mask.

In video posted on the council’s Facebook page, the man is seen walking in Newcastle’s Central Business District area with the box in hand. He also has a backpack on his back.

“Citizens with information are urged to contact the municipality or the police,” he said.

Khumalo added that the jobs in the municipality were not for sale and that any suspicious activity should be reported to the Newcastle municipality offices.
