CAPE TOWN – The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament has supported Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

Mapisa-Nqakula has been criticized for allowing a party delegation to board a South African National Defense Force (SANDF) plane to Zimbabwe.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also asked the minister to explain the circumstances that led her to share the flight to Harare with a high-ranking ANC delegation.

While the party has since pledged to pay for the use of the defense force jet, the party’s defense study group still believes the minister did not violate any laws.

ANC study group whip Thabo Mmutle said the trip was already scheduled to take place, whether the ANC delegation was on board or not.

“When we applied our limited legal understanding, we could not find any prescriptions of the law that the minister has violated with respect to her action in taking the ANC delegation to Zimbabwe.”

Mapisa-Nqakula has also indicated that the working visit to Zimbabwe was now the subject of an investigation by the Public Protector and his office was cooperating with the process.

The minister is also expected to report to Parliament’s defense committee.
