Proteas Head Coach Mark Boucher
- Proteas coach Mark Boucher will wait for a new selector call-in before appointing his test captain.
- Cricket SA has yet to name a replacement for Linda Zondi as head of pick.
- Faf du Plessis stepped down as test skipper in February, while Quinton de Kock is the limited overs captain.
Proteas coach Mark Boucher says a decision will be made on the team’s next test captain once a new selector coordinator is selected.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has yet to name a new selectors coordinator to replace Linda Zondi, while the national team also has no test captain since Faf du Plessis resigned in February.
Boucher said through a press release Monday that they will only make an official announcement about the test pattern once Zondi’s replacement is named.
“We have had a lot of conversations and a lot of time to think about what we want to do. Unfortunately, at this stage, we need a coordinator (of selectors) to come as well and we hope that the coordinator will be elected soon. It is a discussion that will be had and will probably be debated. among some people. We have addressed it in a small talk and have been given the opportunity to have a lot of time to think about the decision, “said Boucher.
Ranger-hitter Quinton de Kock is currently the captain in the limited overs formats, but it is unlikely that he will also wear the test bracelet.
“We will be looking to select someone else for the test position. One of the things that we have learned from a team like England is that a guy like Eoin Morgan comes in and has a lot of time to plan because he is not involved in the test team,” he continued. Boucher.
“So when you move away from white ball cricket, you have the opportunity to sit down and plan, so when they feel like a white ball team again, there is a very clear direction of where they want to go. Sometimes when a player and especially the captain is involved in all three formats, it can be an automatic change of format to another because there is not much time between them.
“So that’s the positive, you have a captain who can sit down and really plan what he wants and can try to bring that vision to the players and gives you some freshness when there is a short response time between formats.”
Boucher added that De Kock’s workload “is quite high.”
“He showed good results in the T20s and in the one-dayers he took over. The last conversation I had with Quinny on this topic was in India, where he felt the workload was going to be a little high for him.
“Whoever the captain is will probably use Quinny’s brain to good effect as a goalkeeper, he probably sees things from the best angle. I’m sure he will add a lot of value just by being Quinton de Kock within the test team,” Boucher concluded.
