JOHANNESBURG – Former Nelson Mandela Bay councilor Andile Lungisa is expected to appeal his two-year prison sentence to the Constitutional Court on Monday.
Lungisa received a two-year prison sentence in 2018 for the 2016 assault on councilman Rano Kayser, by breaking a glass jar on his head during a council meeting.
Andile Lungisa turned himself in to authorities last week to begin his sentence.
Now he has filed court documents with the Constitutional Court in an attempt to avoid prison.
Previously, the Supreme Court of Appeals dismissed his appeal, saying that the assault was life-threatening and that Lungisa had not only behaved in a manner inappropriate to his state, but did not take responsibility for his actions.
Tshwane RET coordinator Ray Hennings said they would stage a protest outside the Courthouse in Pretoria in support of his fellow comrade.
“We will embark on a picket-shaped protest at the Palace of Justice, simply by demonstrating with our posters and banners.”
Other protests will be organized outside of other courts across the country.
