Nehawu continues to fight for pay increases

NSFAS administrator Dr. Randall Carolissen said the union initially demanded a 13% increase, which was later revised to 8%.

“After multiple deliberations, the employer proposed a final 4.3% counter offer which was rejected by Nehawu and has led to the current deadlock.

“Due to the Covid-19 state of disaster and the direct implications of the lockdown on the economy, the government had previously allocated a 4.4% salary increase for employees with lower salaries and no increase for those with higher incomes.

“The government has presented a proposal for a zero increase or a wage freeze for the 2020/21 financial year.”

Carolissen said the scheme would further involve the National Treasury for a mandate on the increase issue.

Two weeks ago, the union delivered a demand memorandum to the government at Union Buildings.

The memorandum was accepted by the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Phaahla.

So far, the government has not responded to the demands, Xaba said.
