JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Health Department said Sunday that three firearms were found at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital with ammunition in one of the unoccupied doctor’s rooms.

Facility security officers made the discovery during a routine patrol.

They found 47 bullets, three 9mm pistols, two pepper spray, two handcuffs, a SAPS reflective vest and a police cap.

It was unclear how the items ended up in the doctor’s rooms.

Acting Gauteng Health MEC Jacob Mamabolo said he was concerned about the development because it endangers the lives of patients. He asked the police to investigate whether the weapons were used to commit a crime.
