The ANC in Limpopo came out in defense of its provincial president and prime minister Stan Mathabatha following Cosatu’s call for his head.

Last week, he resolved to embark on a campaign to demand consequence management and political accountability following serious allegations of corruption in the provincial government.

But the provincial leadership of the ANC affirmed its “unwavering support” for Mathabatha.

Provincial Secretary Soviet Lekganyane said: “The ANC in Limpopo strongly opposes the characterization of our provincial president and prime minister and his ability to lead both the ANC in the province and the government. The ANC, aware of the role of the collective of the alliance, it will seek new commitments within the tripartite alliance and the federation in particular. “

He added:

“It is worrying that the federation ‘gathers’ such a list of concerns, with the determination to degrade the person and character of Mathabatha, who is part of a collective.”

Lekganyane said the party would not address the complaints through the media.

“The ANC believes that Cosatu is aware of existing avenues and platforms created specifically to allow alliance partners to interact,” he said.

In a statement issued after their PEC meeting, Cosatu Provincial Secretary Gerald Twala said that Mathabatha and the ANC in Limpopo were not working in the spirit of a letter sent to party members, instructing them to all those facing serious crimes and charges to turn away.

This after the provincial ANC made the decision to reinstate Vice President Florence Radzilani and Treasurer Danny Msiza, who have been linked to the VBS scandal.

Twala said the prime minister had failed to address allegations of fraud and corruption in his office and other entities, such as Great North Transport, Limpopo Economic Development Agency, Road Agency Limpopo and various municipalities.

Lekganyane, however, said the ANC will seek further compromise within the tripartite alliance.

“It is worrying that the federation ‘put together’ a list of concerns, determined to degrade the person and character of Mathabatha, who is part of a collective.

“The ANC in Limpopo affirms its unwavering support for Mathabatha as president and prime minister. Mathabatha enjoys the confidence of the ANC in Limpopo to lead both the organization and the government in the province,” he added.

Lekganyane said that Mathabatha belonged to a collective of leaders in both the ANC and the government and it would be unfair to point to him as a source of concern and a “weak leader”.
