Donny van de Beek beaten United manchester for playing too “slow” in his “really bad” loss against crystal Palace.
Former Ajax midfielder Van de Beek came off the bench to score on his United debut, but his team was already 2-0 down and lost 3-1 in a lousy start to their Premier League campaign.
The 23-year-old will not remember his debut fondly after United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his team failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek was surprised by United’s lack of momentum and urgency, claiming that they played too direct at times.
“My first game for the club and then you want to win. It doesn’t matter how you want to win,” said Van de Beek.
“I’m really disappointed that we lost 3-1 at home. I think it’s really bad.
“Yes (we didn’t have as much match clarity as Palace) but last week in training we did very well.
“We trained well, so my feeling was very positive. But, yes, today we played too slow.
“We were on the ball too long and I think against an opponent like Crystal Palace you need to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough.”
Dutch international Van de Beek was not consoled by his debut goal.
“Playing for all the fans in stadiums like this is more beautiful to score,” he said.
“But I still scored but we lose and this is the most important thing, that we win.
“We lose, but it’s always good to play for a club like this.
“I made my first game and I hope to help the team and the next time we win, for sure.”
United have very little time to recover with a trip to championship Luton in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday ahead of next weekend’s Premier League game in Brighton.
“I mean, next week we have to step up and we have to win,” Van de Beek told MUTV.
