In the end, the Brazilians came from 13 points behind, to snatch the PSL title on the last day of the season
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has alleged that Kaizer Chiefs benefited from refereeing decisions, but still failed to win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.
The Chiefs appeared to be on track to claim their first league title since 2015, but they capitulated on the final day of the season to allow the Sundowns to claim a third straight league crown.
Sundowns made a remarkable comeback after trailing the Chiefs, at one point, by 13 points.
But after the season resumption after a coronavirus-induced hiatus, Chiefs managed just two wins, three draws and as many losses.
Sundowns, meanwhile, also struggled to stay in shape, but a better start than the Chiefs saw them record four league wins, three draws and two losses.
“They [Kaizer Chiefs] they had a difference of 13 points and I have always said that they benefited from some errors by the referees. I mean, how many times have you benefited from referee mistakes this season? Mosimane told Power FM according to Phakaaathi.
“With all these benefits and 13 points, they ruined it in the end and we capitalized to win it. We lost a lot of points during the biobubble. Our first two games were draws against the Orlando Pirates and Highlands Park. We also lost to Cape Town. But the Chiefs were worse than us during the bubble. “
It’s not the first time Mosimane has claimed the Chiefs were favored, claims he also made throughout the season.
The collapse of the Chiefs caused coach Ernst Middendorp to lose his job and he has since been replaced by Gavin Hunt.
Mosimane drew comparisons between himself and Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, as well as Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa.
Carlo Ancelotti, who has won the [Uefa] Champions League and titles in Italy has joined Everton and Bielsa went to the Championship to join Leeds, I mean, these are the best coaches, but they are still humble, so who am I to say that I have won it all in football? Mosimane said.
“We are not going to sign players to win the Absa Premiership, we can win it with the current squad. But the truth is that the squad that won the treble this season and in 2016/17 has 33, 34 and we have to form a new base of young players ”.
Sundowns have been arguably the most active in the transfer market, confirming at least seven new signings so far.
