A variety of weapons was found in one of the unoccupied doctors’ rooms at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in the early hours of Sunday.

The health department said it consisted of 47 bullets, three 9mm handguns, two pepper spray, two handcuffs, a SAPS reflective vest and a police cap.

They were discovered in the empty barracks, which must be renovated, by security officers during a routine patrol.

The matter has been turned over to Diepkloof police, who have since opened a case and are conducting further investigations.

Gauteng Acting MEC for Health Jacob Mamabolo expressed concern.

“It is deeply disturbing that an unaccounted for ammunition assortment has been found in a space intended to take care of the medical care of patients. We call on the police to get to the bottom of this and make sure that if these weapons were used to commit a crime, those responsible are brought to account, ”Mamabolo said.

In a separate issue, Mamabolo welcomed the resumption of elective surgeries at the hospital and said that with the country moving to alert level 1 as of Monday, it is important that the health system responds accordingly.

The Gauteng health department announced that Bara, in collaboration with Bheki Mlangeni Hospital, has started performing elective surgeries that could not continue during the highest levels of the national lockdown.

“Depending on the development of the Covid-19 pandemic, the facilities will gradually increase the number of surgeries, especially elective cases. Already in the last two weeks, 517 surgeries have been successfully performed ranging from surgery, urology, cataracts to cases of gynecomastia, ”said health spokesperson Kwara Kekana.
