JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng police have discovered more than two dozen illegal firearms during a nightly raid on shops and businesses in Ekurhuleni.

The Okae Molao crime operation was launched again in parts of Gauteng over the weekend with areas like Thokoza particularly targeted.

Saturday night’s raid was led by Police Minister Bheki Cele together with Provincial Commissioner Elias Mawela.

Authorities made several arrests after finding people drinking at a local tavern in violation of the 10 p.m. curfew.

Cele said that there must be a complete mobilization of the communities in the fight against crime: “We are trying to reduce crime. One way to reduce crime is to get illegal firearms and in the last 48 hours we have found 30 illegal firearms. So that’s the kind of operations we need, and if we can reduce illegal firearms, we can commit violent crimes. “
