Johannesburg – Twelve days after the disappearance of 9-year-old Boipelo Sesele, his tiny body was found tucked into a neighbor’s wardrobe in Constantia Park, Kroonstad, in the Free State.
His death, which was described as the first in that area, has shocked the community, with many parents saying they now fear for the safety of their children, while some formed a group of vigilantes who beat people until they found the suspect and killed him.
According to residents, Boipelo’s decomposing body was found in a hut belonging to a man named Rasta, who had previously helped in the search for the girl. Then they beat him to death, but no one says who.
A neighbor next to Rasta’s hut, who chose to remain anonymous, described him as a “character” who did not spend much time in that part of the community, but preferred to go to the “old town” and retired to his hut. at night. , high on what he smoked.
“Some nights he would yell and curse people and that’s when I would go out to scold him into worrying about his language in front of the children,” he said.
Boipelo’s death has caused so much rage and anger within the community that sadly, a neighbor was beaten up by three men wearing ski masks last Wednesday, just for being Rasta’s next-door neighbor.
The man with a bruised face and a broken lip said: “They kept asking questions about what I knew about the murder and even though I kept explaining that I didn’t know anything, they kept hitting me senselessly.
“I had to take my wife and son away from here to protect them because I don’t know what else will happen to me.”
Two weeks ago, the Sunday Independent first reported on Boipelo’s disappearance, alleging that a man had lured the fourth grader to “look for change in stores.” That was the last time they saw her, according to her 6-year-old friend with whom she was playing at the time of her disappearance.
According to a community leader, Morena Thebe, the young woman’s decomposing body was found three blocks from her home in a hut belonging to Rasta.
What is even more puzzling was that Rasta was part of the search party that worked tirelessly to find Boipelo after his disappearance.
“He went up and down with us as we searched for her. I remember how we entered that same courtyard, but we did not search the house or the hut because there was nothing suspicious, “said Thebe, adding that she believes Rasta was controlling her routes by attending her daily meetings.
Suspicions arose when a foul odor permeated Rasta’s ramshackle, dirty, and dirty hut, filled with dilapidated plastics, beds and cabinets.
The hut adjoins an RDP house that supposedly belongs to a Rasta relative.
When they entered the hut, Thebe immediately saw the young woman’s hand sticking out of the closet, she said.
“It was incredible that his body was right under our noses and that the perpetrator was among us, looking for us.
I guess they didn’t kill her there, but then they transported her to the hut and left her there to rot.
“This incident has had a traumatic impact on the entire community and we are not the same since the discovery. Everyone is nervous, everyone is angry and people feel disappointed by the police force that dismissed the cry of Boipelo’s mother, ”he explained.
Boipelo’s mother, Pena Sesele, and her two grandmothers, Moipone and Nketsing Sesele, were mourning the death of their young son. “No mother dreams of burying her son and even while we were looking for Boipelo, I was hoping that he would return to me. That I will be able to hold her and help her overcome the trauma of being lost for so long.
“I never imagined that my little girl would walk out of the house and return in a coffin,” said the grieving mother.
Although the family did not know Rasta personally, they said that in the years they have lived in Constantia Park, they had never imagined a horrible murder would come to their doorstep.
Her maternal grandmother Moipone said: “From the day of her disappearance, I always had visions and dreams that she would return to us, accompanied by much celebration from the community. That was my prayer, ”he added.
