A peaceful protest at Fairview Racecourse Saturday afternoon by irate residents of Nelson Mandela Bay quickly dispersed after police threatened to arrest the protesters.

Protest organizer Monique van der Berg said the rally was a silent vigil and tribute to a horse that died following violent protests at the Greenbushes race track on Thursday morning.

Van der Berg said the purpose of the protest was to show solidarity for violence against animals, children and the elderly, among other issues.

“We do not tolerate violence in any form,” van der Berg said.

Shortly after 3 p.m., a group of about 30 people gathered at the entrance to the Fairview Racecourse on Draaifontein Road, said a prayer and walked to the security entrance of the race field.

A few minutes later, the police arrived at the scene to disperse the group, claiming that proper procedures were not followed to carry out the protest, and ordered those gathered to leave.

At 3:40 pm, those who gathered, followed the instructions of the police and left.
