Cape Town – Community members fatally assaulted a Constantia Park man after the body of a boy was discovered in his hut on Saturday.
The body of 9-year-old Boipelo Sesele (Mesi) was found hidden in a closet at a neighbor’s house after children playing nearby alerted community members to a bad smell.
Boipelo had been missing for 12 days and the community, who had been looking for her, immediately descended into the hut where they forced the door and alerted the Kroonstad police to the gruesome discovery.
“While (the police) were busy at the site, the owner of the hut appeared and was attacked by the community,” said police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele.
The police officers tried to intervene but were also attacked. They managed to get the abused suspect out of the volatile situation, but he was later pronounced dead by emergency medical services.
“We call on the community to remain calm and give the family time to mourn the loss of their daughter,” said Free State Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane.
Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated his administration’s commitment to curbing the pandemic of violence against women and children.
“We are determined to continue our determination to confront the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,” he said.
