In tennis matches, we often see players make mistakes by hitting the ball wide or directly into the net. Referees are human too, and therefore can also make mistakes. That is exactly what happened in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open where Novak Djokovic played Dominik Koepfer.

In the third set of the match, the Serbian broke Koepfer to go up 2-1. After this, the referee, in his haste to announce the score, mistakenly called Novak Djokovic ‘Federer’. Embarrassed by his mistake, the referee immediately corrected himself. As expected, this was not unnoticed.

Novak Djokovic gets angry

The referee’s error was one of the lighter moments of the match. Unfortunately, the match also produced some moments that were not so pleasant. One of those moments was when Novak Djokovic broke his racket at the end of the second set.

Trailing 5-4 on the set, Novak had to serve up his game to even the score. However, he failed to do that and Koepfer won the set 6-4, thus leveling the match into a complete set. Novak was obviously angry and took it out by breaking his racket, prompting a racket abuse warning.

The Serb, however, did not let the warning affect him. He calmly played the third set and won the match by winning the third set 6-3. With this victory, he has advanced to the semifinal of the Italian Open. He will play Casper Ruud, who won a very tough match in their quarter-final clash.

Novak should win the semi-final clash with ease and give himself a chance to lift his fifth Italian Open trophy.
