Sony confirmed that the PS5 would only support PS4 games. To clarify, “PlayStation” in the title refers to “PS1” games. However, “PS1” is not its official name, but I digress.
Sony has gone out of its way to let fans know that the new PS5 will not be backward compatible beyond the PS4. The move hasn’t stopped a large chunk of the PlayStation online community still waiting beyond hope for compatibility with older PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 titles.
Nostalgia for ancient games
Players are a strange group. While we all covet the latest and most robust hardware, there is still a great affinity for older games. These are the titles that initially hooked us.
The games that taught us the magic of losing ourselves in a developer’s vision. It’s an inexplicable love story between players and games from decades ago that hardly resembles the triple-A titles of today.
Who remembers playing Prince of Persia in MS-DOS? This love of old games, however, transcends logic for most players; those who still remember the wasted hours of our youth as they fondly try to rack up high scores.
The appeal of these older titles has been the focus of many developers, as several classic titles have been remade in recent years to take advantage of advancements in gaming hardware.
The rise of remakes
Capcom has released remakes of their Demonic resident installments with great success including Demonic resident which was released in a terrifying incarnation of virtual reality.
This year alone, one of the most iconic Playstion titles: Final Fantasy V11 – got a remake for the PS4, bringing back many happy memories for PlayStation fans that have been around since the beginning.
Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan in a recent interview went to great lengths to emphasize that the PS5’s focus was on allowing current PS4 players to play titles from the vast library of PS4 games.
“We take into account the specialized engineering for the PS5, as we produce the device. In between that, the PS4 already has 100 million players; We think they should also want to play PS4 titles on the PS5, so we included PS4 support. “
He explained that by implementing that, the team “also focused their efforts on incorporating the high-speed SSD and the new DualSense controller at the same time.”
“So, unfortunately, we were unable to achieve the implementation of such compatibility,” he explained regarding PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 games.
An exciting line of new games
The good news is that the developers are bringing new, polished and updated versions of many of our favorite titles of yore to our consoles anyway; And with a few disappointing exceptions, we’re doing a great job capturing the magic that made us fall in love with these titles in the first place.
Earlier this week, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 would launch in select regions on November 12, 2020, with the rest of the world receiving the console on November 19.
During the event, Sony announced that a new version of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is in development for the next generation console. Players can look forward to the game in 2021.
