Manchester United staged a coup when they signed Donny van de Beek for £ 40 million (BBC). It was a brilliant move in an initially hopeful summer.
However, many United fans are angered that the club did not follow through on their signing with a couple more.
The Jadon Sancho saga looks like it will run into next month. While Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon and Thiago Alcantara head elsewhere.
Social media is full of United fans urging their side to open the checkbook before it’s too late. But closing this window as a complete failure is an insult to the only star that has made it so far.
Van de Beek is a wonderful player who looks every inch like a great United future.
Just as United cleverly signed in January, bringing Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford, they have done the same this summer.
Of course, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs quality on the right wing and Sancho is the ideal target. Another forward is also needed, with an over-reliance on Anthony Martial to keep fit.
But closing a summer in which Van de Beek has arrived for a bargain price is myopic. There is almost three weeks left for United to get another deal or two.
In the meantime, Van de Beek should start turning United fans’ frowns upside down!
One man but a big difference
As good as Bruno Fernandes had been for Sporting Lisbon, few expected him to transform United’s season with such dazzling style.
It would have been easy for United to think their midfield review was complete and focused elsewhere. But the arrival of Van de Beek shows how seriously Solskjaer is taking the new campaign.
The Dutchman scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists last season. And he should play even more alongside Fernandes and Paul Pogba.
If Van de Beek is paying attention to United’s Twitter chatter, he won’t be blamed for thinking: What about me?!
Yes, United could do more. But the signing of Van de Beek shows the work that has been going on behind the scenes.
Now he will try to show that he can be the missing piece in a United team that is heading in the right direction.
