The next generation of game consoles, Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, are just around the corner.
Microsoft has confirmed The X Series will launch on November 10, 2020, with a suggested retail price of R11,999 in South Africa.
The PlayStation 5 is also priced at R11,999 for the standard console with a disc drive and R9,999 for the digital edition.
Both companies have bet on a key capacity as a major selling point for their consoles: 4K games at 60 frames per second.
Technically speaking, 4K is a filming standard with a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160.
However, when it comes to display standards, the 3840 x 2160 ultra high definition resolution is accepted as 4K.
Those who do not yet own a UHD / 4K TV or monitor should purchase one to fully enjoy the graphical power of the X Series and PS5.
To help you minimize the total price of your next-gen gaming investment, we’ve compiled a list of the most affordable 4K TVs and computer monitors available in South Africa.
It should be noted that our only criteria for this list was that the display offered a resolution of 3840 x 2160.
We don’t consider any additional display features that are likely to improve the overall viewing experience, such as HDR, local dimming, or panel types.
Cheapest TVs
If you prefer to use your console in the living room or while sitting on a sofa at a distance from the screen, then a television is the optimal solution.
The cheapest UHD display we saw online was a 49-inch Sansui UHD TV at R4,299 from HiFi Corporation.
However, this TV does not offer HDR or built-in smart capability, and other features were limited as well.
Below are the 10 cheapest 4K TVs we could find.

The cheapest 4K monitors
If you’re more concerned with features like low input lag, high refresh rates, and tight pixel density, then you can go for a UHD monitor.
However, one obstacle in this category is the prevalence of ultra-wide panels with unconventional aspect ratios.
An example of this is Samsung’s UltraWide C43J89 gaming monitor, with a resolution of 3840 x 1200.
At this time, it is not yet known whether the PS5 or Xbox Series X will support aspect ratios other than 16: 9, which correlates to the horizontal and vertical pixel ratio in HD and UHD resolution.
We exclude all gaming monitors with uneven aspect ratios from our comparison.
27-inch LG UHD Monitor (UL500-W) – R5,499
