  • This was just before police investigator Charl Kinnear was found dead behind the wheel of his car near his home.
  • Colleagues and neighbors at the site recalled fond memories of Kinnear.

“It was shortly after 3 o’clock, we heard three shots,” a Bishop Lavis resident said Friday. “No, Mommy, four shots,” interjected a little boy. They were in the crowd on Gearing Street, the home of police detective Charl Kinnear, where he died at the wheel of his sedan around 3 p.m. Friday.

Nearby, a policeman quietly said, “He was my friend for 30 years …” Behind the official facade, a tear rolled.

The crime scene was cordoned off by multiple layers of police security, to keep it intact.

Many of the top Western Cape SAPS officials, including Chief of Detectives Maj. Gen. Jeremy Vearey, had heated discussions near the place of death.

The spokesman for the Provincial Commissioner, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, asked that detectives be allowed to investigate and would not speculate on the motives.

“He was a very good personal friend,” said a neighbor. “He played soccer with his children in the street, he spoke with the community. He was very passionate about his work.”

Another resident admitted: “Yes, we were actually scared, we lived close to him, because he had a very high profile. We had a lot of scares.”

“I don’t know why they took away his protection. They used to be out here 24/7. They stationed one of those Nyalas here, with guards and cameras and everything. On different shifts.”

One man recounted how he had heard the shots.

He had run to the vehicle from home. “I saw him. I couldn’t tell if he was still alive. But I supported him … He was my friend for a long, long time.” him to help me, day or night, and he would help me. “

Shortly after the shooting, News24 received a call from a sobbing woman for help.

Later, he sent this message: “Good morning. I am the wife of a police officer who is in a similar position to the late Colonel Kinnear who [sic] he was shot and killed today. We are concerned that there is also a threat to my husband’s life and so far we have not received support from SAPS. “

National Police Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole expressed his outrage at Kinnear’s death.

It tasked Western Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Yolisa Matakata with immediately mobilizing the 72-hour activation plan.

This was a plan to mobilize critical departments, including Criminal Intelligence, Forensic Experts, Falcons and Tactical Units to ensure that no evidence or information is lost that could aid in the successful investigation of this case.

“We are all saddened by this tragic premature loss of Colonel Kinnear and his assassination is a great loss for South Africa and its people,” Sitole said. “The South African Police Service will not rest until those responsible for his murder are brought to justice.”
