Johannesburg – EFF leader Julus Malema is the latest politician to support now-jailed Nelson Mandela Bay councilor Andile Lungisa.
Lungisa began serving his two-year prison sentence on Thursday after unsuccessful attempts to overturn his sentence.
Lungisa was convicted of assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm in 2018.
This was after he assaulted Councilman Rano Kayser with a glass jug during a council session in 2016.
Last week, the Supreme Court of Appeals dismissed his request to overturn his sentence.
His latest attempt is with the Constitutional Court, since he presented documents to reduce his sentence.
He is reported to have argued in court documents that prison is an inappropriate place for him. He said his sentence was too harsh.
He had also tried to go to the High Court to have his bail extended while the Constitutional Court examined the matter.
On Thursday, footage surfaced of Lungisa arriving at a prison in Port Elizabeth to begin her sentence. He continued to profess his innocence and the harshness of the sentence.
He was flanked by members of the ANC who supported him during his arrival.
Several ANC politicians, including members of the ANC Youth League, have expressed dissatisfaction with Lungisa’s prison sentence.
The Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandille Masina, also expressed his support for Lungisa.
Malema also intervened Thursday night calling Lungisa’s sentence “unfair” and claiming he did nothing wrong.
“@mrlungisa did nothing wrong, and I support him. Soon I will visit him in jail and support all initiatives to get him out of jail soon. Be strong my DP; you are our generational vice president,” Malema tweeted.
Malema’s tweets have been met with mixed reactions and some social media users responded to his comment by tagging the video showing Lungisa reaching for the glass jar and smashing it on Kayser’s head.
