According to Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, members of the SANDF were monitoring Covid-19 compliance in the area when they approached a group of people not wearing face masks.

“When asked why they weren’t wearing masks, an argument allegedly broke out and one of the soldiers shot the victim,” Mojapelo said.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital where he receives medical attention.

The 29-year-old soldier was arrested and charged with attempted murder. On Friday, he will appear before the Morebeng Magistrates Court.

SANDF spokesman Capt. Jaco Theunissen confirmed the incident to News24.

“There was an altercation between members of the SANDF and a group of people who were not wearing masks. When the public tried to grab a soldier’s rifle, a shot was fired, wounding a man in the upper leg. What happened is regrettable. “

Theunissen confirmed that the SANDF member has been charged with attempted murder.
