CAPE TOWN – Former African National Congress (ANC) Councilor Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB), Andile Lungisa, has begun serving a 2-year prison sentence.

Lungisa was convicted of the assault on a fellow councilor in 2016.

After unsuccessful appeals against a 2018 conviction, he now appears at North End Prison in Port Elizabeth.

Lungisa is serving time for breaking a glass water jug on the head of a Democratic Alliance adviser during a heated council meeting in 2016.

His appeal was recently dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Anelisa Ngcakani, from the National Prosecutor’s Office, said that she requested bail pending the outcome of a request for permission to appeal to the Constitutional Court.

“The bond hearing will be Monday in Grahamstown Superior Court and the NPA will oppose the bond.”

On Thursday morning, Lungisa was greeted by a crowd of supporters outside the prison.

He tweeted: “Love guys, my heart hurts. Thank you very much, we will get over it. ”
