The Breede Valley Township has paid tribute to its Deputy Mayor, John Levendal, who died this week just weeks after the death of his wife Koekie.
Levendal died at Mediclinic Paarl at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke.
Mayor Antoinette Steyn said her death came as a shock, not only to the Hex Valley and Breede Valley communities, but also to alumni scattered across the country since her days as a school principal.
“Deputy Mayor Levendal had an extraordinary way of running things,” Steyn said.
“With whatever situation he was faced with, he would first take a moment to summarize and analyze the whole situation and the scenarios with which it could play out.”
Steyn said:
He never reacted blindly, but he always took the time to make thoughtful decisions that were in the best interest of his students and the community.
He understood the relationships between farmers and farm workers, and the doors were always open when he came to a farm. It was also a vital conduit between the provincial health and safety departments and the municipality.
She loved politics and helping people, so her home in De Doorns was also a meeting point for people who needed help with problems.

His brother Harry is the mayor of Mossel Bay Township.
“Oubie” was scheduled to be honored at a council meeting in October to mark his days of service since 1995 on the De Doorns township council.
Steyn said the death of his partner, “Tannie Koekie”, three weeks ago was a shock to everyone, particularly him.
The concussion is believed to have caused a stroke.
