Two people were killed and four others were injured during a shooting in Hennopspark, Centurion on Thursday morning.
Two of the injured are police officers who are believed to have been part of an operation that took place in the area.
Netcare911 spokesman Shawn Herbs said paramedics were called to the scene at 09:04.
“There was an ongoing operation and two policemen were shot,” he said.
“One had suffered serious injuries after being shot in the face. The second policeman had suffered serious injuries after being shot in the lower limbs.
“Both were treated at the scene by paramedics from multiple services and both officers were flown to specialized facilities.”
Ambu-Link’s Xander Loubser confirmed that two people believed to be suspects were shot and killed at the scene, two critical patients also believed to be suspects were taken to hospital by ER24 and Emer-G-med, respectively.
“What happened before the shooting is subject to police investigation.”
Loubser said members of the police were flown to Milpark hospital by Netcare911 helicopters after receiving advanced life support intervention at the scene.
“We would like to thank the emergency services for their quick response. We also keep the two policemen in our prayers and thoughts, ”he said.
Residents of the area were unable to enter or leave their facilities due to the streets in the area being cordoned off. Zacdanïel Janse van Vuuren said the road between Theuns Street and Edison Crescent was affected.
“We cannot leave our complex because the streets are cordoned off,” he said.
“I saw three helicopters come to help the wounded policemen.”
Details about the event that led to the shooting are still incomplete.
The police are expected to give a full report later.
