It looks like Manchester United will lose to Tottenham in the battle for Gareth Bale.
The Spurs are now “close” to a deal to bring the Welshman back to north London, according to agent Jonathan Barnett.
Bale has also been linked to a move to Old Trafford as an alternative to Jadon Sancho with a deal this summer that seems increasingly unlikely.
United’s level of interest in the 31-year-old has been difficult to judge, but previous comments from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer show the complex situation.
When asked about Welsh when the links first emerged in March, he highlighted the need to consider several factors.
While he did not want to speak directly about Bale, he generalized and stated that the club should not think in the short term and highlighted the complex issue of weighing a great signing.
And that underscores how he would likely be reluctant to move for Bale despite his growing need to contemplate a temporary fix if his search for Sancho is postponed until next year.
“I can’t really comment on Gareth Bale or specific names because they are owned by other clubs,” Solskjaer said in March.
“But we must definitely look for quality players, and players who can improve us as a team.
“There are so many factors you have to think about when you hire players.
“It is not easy, I do not know if it is not easy either, when you are in the media or when you are a supporter, you can think in the short term.
Manchester United are looking to chart their way back to the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already signed Donny van de Beek, but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

“We also have to think about longevity, who will fit the personality.
“So there are so many things to think about.”
For the Spurs, there have not been the same reservations.
Unlike United, Bale is not an alternative to another goal, but an opportunity they have weighed and decided is worthwhile.
Real Madrid and Bale are interested in a permanent deal, but Spurs are only discussing a loan at the moment.
And Bale has already spoken to José Mourinho with a move that seems increasingly likely as Real Madrid seek to get him off the books.
Agent Barnett said: “There is a long way to go on some issues, but Gareth is certainly closer to leaving Madrid than at any other time in the last seven years.
“The deal is complicated, but there is reason to believe that a deal is close and things could move forward very quickly if the discussions continue to go well. Gareth has spoken with José and has explained to him how the Spurs have a special place in his heart ”.
