At least one horse has been euthanized with pangas and others have been attacked as a protest allegedly over non-payment by the FIU at Fairview racecourse in Port Elizabeth on Thursday morning.
Details are vague, but according to witness Nikki Durrant, who is on the scene, police have made several arrests.
She said a staff dispute at the CCMA was also fueling the protest.
“People trying to rescue horses have had stones thrown at their cars.”
Other eyewitness reports say several horses have injuries, including broken legs, while trying to flee the fires.
A Fairview spokesman said the protest began around 6 a.m. Thursday and that protesters have since dispersed. There were no further comments.
Meanwhile, locals on social media say the horses have been chased into the bushes.
Meg Wilson, a spokeswoman for the NSPCA, called the event “chaos” and said police had called in reinforcements.
“The scene is still active, so we don’t have all the details yet. We know that at least one horse has been beaten to death and people have been chasing the horses.
“The necessary actions will be taken to prosecute those involved.”
This is a developing story
