The Medical Protection Society has confirmed the death of Johannesburg anesthetist Dr. Abdulhay Munshi.

“The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Abdulhay Munshi,” the society said in a statement.

“The thoughts and prayers of the MPS and SA healthcare profession go out to Dr. Munshi’s family during this sad time.”

Reports indicate that Munshi was shot and killed on Wednesday.

Police confirmed the shooting incident but did not release Munshi’s name.

Brig Mathapelo Peters said the shooting was carried out by unknown suspects Wednesday in Norwood.

“At this time, the police are not free to reveal or confirm the identity of the deceased. The motive for the shooting has yet to be determined, ”Peters said.

Munshi was one of two prominent doctors who found himself in the middle of a medical storm after he blamed them for the death of a 10-year-old patient after surgery.

Munshi and Professor Peter Beale were charged with wrongful death.

The patient, Zayaan Sayed, died at Netcare’s Park Lane Clinic in October last year, hours after Beale performed what was to be a routine laparoscopic operation to stop the reflux.

The two specialists were released on bail and made their last court appearance on August 31.

Their case was postponed until November 16 and they were still out on bail of R10,000 each.

Condolence messages have started to circulate with the medical fraternity mourning Munshi’s death.

Meanwhile, the police have asked eyewitnesses to come forward.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect (s) is urged to report to the nearest police station or call the crime stop at 08600 10111. The information can be provided anonymously, “Peters said. .
