Timo Werner is right, but can still regret turning Liverpool down

Timo Werner recently spoke about turning down Liverpool and said it is the “best decision” he could have made. He’s right too, but he might still regret it.

Werner joined Chelsea in the summer for around £ 48 million, a substantial fee in a transfer window like this. That article also has an interesting line. Werner joined Chelsea after Liverpool decided not to go after the player.

Liverpool felt it was too expensive at this point, but the player didn’t want to wait. He decided to move to Stamford Bridge and forced the Reds to move on. And now he’s broken his silence a bit about that.

“When I decided to leave Leipzig, I spoke to different clubs, of course,” Werner told ESPN. “Along with Chelsea, there were other clubs that I spoke to. But for me I don’t want to talk so much about other clubs because in the end I decided on Chelsea.

“There are other clubs like Liverpool, they have a great team and maybe I could fit in well in some other team but in the end I decided on Chelsea because it was the best decision I could make, not only because of the style of football but also what they have shown me ”.

It is quite telling, then, that the only club he mentions is Liverpool.

The best decision

Werner says joining Chelsea was the “best decision” for him, and he’s right. While we believe that he actually only turned down a future transfer to Liverpool, he decided to end all chances of going there by choosing Chelsea.

It’s hard not to agree with him. For one thing, Liverpool may never have returned. We think so, although that is pure speculation on our part.

But there was no guarantee. And on top of that, there was no guarantee Werner would even play at Anfield.

Liverpool have the best three forwards in the world, after all, not necessarily in terms of individual talent but as an attacking unit. It’s hard to interrupt that, even for someone as good as Werner.

Would you have been a regular this season? We’re not sure about that, it may have gotten quite out of the bank. And right now, Werner made the best decision he could have made for his immediate future.

However, we believe that in the long run you may regret not waiting.

Future star

Liverpool’s three forwards are 28. They’ll be 30 before we know it and a 24-year-old who learned the ropes would have been ideal at this point. No, Werner wouldn’t get the first team football he wants right now. Yes, an understudy role may have damaged your reputation a bit.

But he would have been in an ideal position to take over as the team’s attacking star. He is a player we wanted, after all.

That’s an amazing position to be in as well. We have seen how Jurgen Klopp and company. they have developed the current batch into bona fide superstars. He could have done it very easily with such a talented player as Werner.

Compare that to Chelsea. How many attacking stars have recently developed? We can really only say Eden Hazard, and they signed him in 2012. Aside from him, they signed ready-to-use attackers like Diego Costa or had players who were great but not elite like Willian.

Werner will have to buck a trend, then, if he wants to become one of the best. However, if Werner had waited for Liverpool, he simply might have been next in line to stardom.
